This follows after state officials rejected their application for a conditional use permit to open a planned Bitcoin mining operation in Pierce County. Their efforts almost paid off, as the Pierce County Commissioners voted unanimously to reject the controversial permit at their meeting on February 11. The proposal, submitted by Eric Su of LN8 Energy of Dallas, TX in November 2024, has met with significant opposition from local citizens.

The location of the proposed facility, 1199 Cason Road in the Cason/Rehobeth Community. It proposes constructing a storage facility to house servers and a chiller, the latter which will be cooled with groundwater pulled from a well on the property. In reality, the $50 million project has stirred controversial and fear-filled sentiment among community members.

Community opposition to the Bitcoin mining operation is based on many factors. People are worried with the chosen location of the site and the noise environmental component. Moreover, the operation’s massive energy consumption would put undue pressure on the local grid, stoking the main camp’s arguments. Residents raised concerns over possible health impacts, water contamination, and creation of hazardous waste.

Additional resistance comes out of concern that the new Bitcoin mining operation will bring controversial declining property values to the region. Just as many in the community are upset over how close the proposed site would be to the Rehobeth Baptist Church. This close distance has caused a firestorm of contention between locals.

The appeal hearing on July 8 will provide LN8 Energy an opportunity to address the concerns raised and present their case for the conditional use permit. The commissioners would then have to decide again, this time based only on the facts and legal arguments.
